Artists Navigating 2020

Responding to

Residency Program

It’s no secret that 2020 has been a kick in the teeth to many artists, especially live performers. Culture Lab LIC is committed to supporting artists of all disciplines, but it has been challenging to extend those opportunities to live performers with the current NYS Covid19 restrictions.

We began thinking “What would really make a difference to performing artists this winter? What struggles will they face, and how can we change those struggles into creative challenges?”

We keep hearing that the biggest artistic challenge being faced by performing artists currently is the vast unknown of when it will be safe and financially viable to stage a performance.

So, we ran with that…

Culture Lab LIC brings you Emergence...

In the Artist's Studio: A Conversation with Long Island City Artists

During COVID-19, many artists have been continuing to work and create pieces that reflect our current times and their experiences. Three artists have graciously allowed us to virtually "enter" their studios, and create an exhibition tour dedicated to their creative spaces. These 3 artists will be speaking with us tonight, in a conversation moderated by Edjo Wheeler, Executive Director of Culture Lab LIC.

Our 3 guests are: Karen Fitzgerald, Orestes Gonzalez, and Kaiser Kamal.

This event is part of our LIC: Present exhibition, co-created by Long Island City Artists, Culture Lab LIC, Queens Memory, and Hunters Point at Queens Public Library.

Welcome to Culture Lab LIC

at The Plaxall Gallery!

We know the artists and the nonprofits who make this world a better place are struggling now. Although our indoor art gallery is temporarily closed to the public, our series of Summer Music events is going strong in our outdoor performance space, and we have continued our community services by providing space and support to organizations like the ones listed here.  A lot of people have been asking us "what about when this is over?"

Our commitment is that The Plaxall Gallery will still be here!  We have an amazing 12,000 square-foot arts and community center generously donated by Plaxall Inc., and will be providing space for you, our loving community, so that you can experience and create art together as soon as we are able to share space again. Our fine art gallery will reopen to both local and international artists, and we will be providing space to performers of all disciplines to develop and perform their work in our 90 seat theatre.

Local nonprofits like the PS/IS78 and PS384 PTA, Hour Children, Alcoholics Anonymous, Queens Council on the Arts, Hunters Point Parks Conservancy, and so much more, will have a space with us again!

Our artist residency programs will continue, and the space you have come to know as a cornerstone of arts, culture and community services will still be standing. In the meantime, hold tight, work together and keep life moving forward!
