Emergence Residency Program

It’s no secret that 2020 has been a kick in the teeth to many artists, especially live performers. Culture Lab LIC is committed to supporting artists of all disciplines, but it has been challenging to extend those opportunities to live performers with the current NYS Covid19 restrictions.

We began thinking “What would really make a difference to performing artists this winter? What struggles will they face, and how can we change those struggles into creative challenges?”

We keep hearing that the biggest artistic challenge being faced by performing artists currently is the vast unknown of when it will be safe and financially viable to stage a performance.

So, we ran with that…

Culture Lab LIC brings you Emergence

Emergence is an artist residency program that offers artists & companies free, socially distant space where they can develop and produce new work. Starting on January 1st, 2020, we will choose a select number of artists to take part in Emergence. Work developed between January 1st and March 31st will be shown at our four-day festival in early spring showcasing the emergence of work created during the challenging months of winter.

Acceptance into the residency includes:

- Free rehearsal space from January 1st through March 31st to develop new work

- Free performance space to perform your work this spring

- A platform to request financial support run by our non-profit organization

- An opportunity to be featured in a documentary film about keeping art alive during COVID-19

- Access to our database of creatives looking to collaborate

- Mentorship programs available for emerging artists & companies

This festival will be produced live. Hopefully, it can take place in our 12,000 square foot gallery/90 seat theatre, but if we are still limited by COVID-19 restrictions in early spring, we will work with you to make sure the work can be performed live, even if that means it is performed outside or live streamed to an outdoor screen set up in our parking lot, and only available to a limited number of rotating, in-person audience members.

Culture Lab LIC will transform our donation page to outline each project in the residency, allowing those looking to support Culture Lab LIC to also choose an artist/company/piece of work to support, donating 50% to your company, and 50% to our organization to keep this program running.

Ideally, we are looking for artists and companies comfortable with having their process documented throughout the winter, who will be willing to take part in a documentary we will be making about being an artist during the time of Covid19.

Accepted mediums include: Theatre, Dance, Music, Performance Art, Puppetry, Performance Art… you name it.

Required: A commitment of 3 days a week of rehearsal booked in the space for a minimum of four weeks, (or an intensive rehearsal period if you plan to work on a different timescale), and availability to take part in our spring festival, tentative dates April 1st-4th, 2021.

To apply, please send a proposal of the piece you would like to develop including links to your past work to:

tana@culturelablic.org

We will curate the program based on your proposals, so let us know why you want this opportunity, and how it will help you as an artist at this point in your development. Deadline for submissions is Dec 15th.
